So, what are some potential causes of interior roof leaks?
1. Damaged or Missing Shingles
This is the most obvious and easiest to spot. The next question to answer is, ‘how many shingles are missing?’ James Casey, one of our founders here at Greentek Roofing and Solar, commonly finds that most homeowners check for missing shingles from the ground. He recommends that if you are going to check yourself, to do so from the roof, not the ground.
Most missing shingles can be chalked up to poor weather. If it is a few shingles it is possible to replace the shingles and can be done so at your discretion. However, if you feel the damage warrants an inspection give us a call we are happy to come by.
2. Clogged Gutters
Another obvious problem to spot. Yet, if there is an interior leak in your home, a clogged gutter could be the cause. The purpose of a gutter is to drain water from your roof by providing an area through which water can flow. If that flow is blocked water can accumulate in certain areas of your roof and seep through into the home, causing, eventually, an interior leak.
3. Attic Condensation
Hot summers and cold winters make for mold’s perfect environment. Therefore, if the leak is coming from the attic, it is most likely going to be accompanied by mold and mildew. Which makes total sense as your attic lies between the outdoor temperature and the indoor temperature of your home.
The first thing you should do is take care of any mold that is built up in the space and address the leaking portion of the attic. From there, perform precautionary checks on the roof vents to ensure proper airflow and secure proper ventilation systems as needed.
Whether you have an old roof or a new roof, these problems can make it susceptible to interior leakage. Being that you live in Tampa, it is even more likely to be the case. So, to recap, if spot an interior leak here are a few things to look for: missing shingles, clogged gutters, and condensation in the attic. Once again, if you suspect that there is structural damage to your roof from storm damage we highly advise calling a local roofing contractor in Tampa!
